As an American, I can assure you that some Americans are smart and some are stupid. It depends on the American in question.
As for knowledge about other countries, we are pretty ignorant. Our news media doesn't do a good job of covering foreign affairs and our schools chiefly focus on American history, but this doesn't mean we are dumb, just out of the loop.
