Yes. Especially those shitty religions that think they're the only correct one.. Christians, Muslims and Jews.
I wouldn't mind the likes of Buddhists, Taoists and Hindus carrying on as they've no problem with what other people think.
I agree, and just want to springboard off your post and elaborate.
I think the issue with The Abrahamic religions (especially Islam right now, not so much Christianity anymore) is how politicised they are.
A private/personal belief in the supernatural or something higher, within reason, is harmless. Yes we can go into whether it's sensible or scientifically validated, but in terms of the morality of the situation, it's not a threat to anyone. That's why the "Eastern" religions are very tolerable and don't get much heat from secularists, because they are inherently personal and generally secular in nature.
When religion is politicised though, all hell breaks loose. The reason Middle Eastern countries have terror, public executions, blasphemy laws, modesty codes and fucking stupid stringent religious rules has EVERYTHING to do with the politicised status of Islam in those countries. This doesn't come from nowhere, this is the work of fanatics, who take directly from the example of their prophet to create a society like they create.
The same can be said of Medieval Europe, where again, fanatics were taking the worst bits of the Bible to rule over everyone with an iron fist. The West and Christianity look cuddly and liberal today because of secularism, because religion has been ripped out of state affairs and been reduced down to some blubbering Republicans. That doesn't make Christianity "nice" necessarily, it just means it's a dog with a jaw clamp on. Islam has to go the same way now.
Spot on. I've said the same in conversation with a few people.. Islam is currently going through exactly what Christianity went through 500 years ago. You're right about the politicisation.. Even Buddhists can get a bit shirty when there's some land being stolen! I've many a time explained this to people who naively think the Northern Ireland troubles are about disagreements on religion!
Do you think a world without religion would be better
