Do you think " gay-only " events are unnescessary?

I'm a gay male, and I really believe that " Gay-only " events are unnescessary. There are things like Gay Pride Parades, Gay Vacation Cruises, and etc. I mean, I don't see straight people having Straight Pride Parades and Straight Vacation Cruises, so why is it nescessary to have Gay ones?

It's just adding to the hate and even though we're not purposely trying to shut straight people out, the fact that we have to label it as a " Gay " whatever event sends an indirect bad message.

What do you guys think?

I believe it's unnescessary too. 65
I don't think it's nescessary, but it's not bad to have either. 41
I don't think having these events sends a bad message. 32

Your argument against gay pride is like the idea that we should have White History Month. Every month is white history month, and everything ever in the history of everything has celebrated straight pride. It's something for people to either confront oppression and/or celebrate how far we've come in conquering that oppression. Or just, you know, to celebrate being yourself, in a society that is largely intolerant of you being yourself.

tell you the truth, i think events like that attract the attention of the haters, and that causes problems. there can be things like that but i think they should be a little more secritive.

But why should they have to hide from the haters? Let the haters hide from them. Let them shelter themselves in their cozy cocoon. This is a way for the gay community to shout, "you know what? We're happy and proud with who we are, and we shouldn't have to hide it." I think they deserve that pride, because they've never been able to voice it before. Secret pride is not pride.

i can understand that, i cant stand watching them get hurt over there sexuality. did you know that soldiers who were gay and in the army, when they died a bunch of god damned haters show up and protest saying that god is happy to have one of them die, never mind that the parents a mourning the loss of a loved child. they are freiken a-holes. thats why i think they should be a little more under the covers because i dont want to see more get hurt over something that doesnt need violence or hatred.

I get where you're coming from. But the onus is upon us to change the homophobes, not the other way around. If the gay community is still hiding in reaction to the haters, then they're still oppressed, nothing is solved, and the hatred roams free. There will always be hatred, but to cower in fear of it is to be a slave to it.

Awww, let the fairies have their fun. There's too many gay bashers that would ruin their good time and want to beat everyone up or kill them. I think its fine. Its a more comfortable environment for them. It may be a little over the top, but I say let them be

  • I think it's nice that Gay people have these events. Maybe they can meet Gay friends, or a lover like this. And it's always nice to know that you're not alone. As for the homophobics, fuck em they can jump off a building for all I care.

Gay pride parade is a little ridiculous. Who really cares if you're gay? Why do you have to flaunt it?
But I do see the point of gay cruises and gay bars, because if you have a crappy gaydar it's nice to just KNOW that those around you have the same sexual orientation instead of getting mixed signals and ending up embarrassing yourself.

I don't know, I'm not gay so I don't know how easy it is to tell who's flirting material and who's not. Unless a guys wearing skinny jeans, singing show tunes and carrying a small pooch I just can't tell if a person's gay or not.

sounds gay.... nah i dont care. it just makes it easier for gays to find other gays because its not like you have a sticker on your back saying "GAY" to tell other gays that you are gay. but like everything and anything, someone will get upset in one way or another. there is no pleasing everyone.

I think it's just fine. It's a little like black pride, they're not just celebrating who they are, but also what they've overcome. I know it's a weird comparison and they're really nothing alike, but I'm just trying to give an example.

    Really?

Every day is straight pride day.
This may be difficult for you to understand, seeing as is hasn't already crossed your mind, but being LBGT and in the closet (Or out with no gay friends) can feel well, isolating.

Gay bars, gay pride, gay-only forums, these all help overcome this loneliness and feeling of being alone.

I thinks it's not needed. To be honest, it's discriminatory against straight people. That would be like having a "whites only" association. Gay people have the right to openly express themselves, why not just have clubs are things made for gay people, but still allow straight people in.

I have troubles accepting show offs in general. Whether they are gay or straight it doesn't really matter. I also have troubles accepting people who get all moralistic or horny out of their minds because of some guy showing a buttcheek or some chick wearing a tight shirt. I find these people quite immature and superficial. I mean whatever you want to wear is okey but is it really necessary behaving like a damn showgirl? Like:we get it,you think you are hot and are so self confident. Hoopie! Clothing is clothing. You'd say it is my best dress. Well i don't really care. It isn't the dress making you a monk. Or a gayguy. Or anything else for that matter. This means i feel the same way whether i am looking at a bunch of gay guys parading in their new shiny clothing down the streets or a bunch of straight girls doing the same thing. Unimpressed. And to me they all stay show offs posing and parading.

I see both good and bad in this. good, cause it can inspire people to be true with themselves, and bad cause it can trigger more hate among homophobes, and can be seen as embarrassing by other gay people and/or tolerant straight or bi people.

It also singles out them and can subject them to the label.

Be who you want to be, not by the label society places on you!

I used to think the same thing until I read what taciturn said. It makes total sense.

On another note, are you overly flamboyant? I never understood why a lot of gay men take it overboard personality wise. It's not even like they're acting like women cuz women don't even act like that. I hope I'm not being offensive, I'm just really curious.

I don't know a lot of gay males, but I had a gay friend, more so an associate, my senior year of highschool. He was too ghetto to ask and he would've definitely been offended if I asked.

Now, I have a new gay guy friend who is absolutely adorable. We're getting close as friends through a mutual best friend, and I would love to ask him this but we're not that close yet so I don't want to offend him.

    Sorry, long comment -_-

They don't "take it overboard" because people don't choose their personalities. Gay guys don't realize they're gay and then say "well I guess I should start talking with a lisp!" There are feminine men and masculine men, and feminine women and masculine women, and everything in between, which is why the terms "feminine" and "masculine" aren't very useful terms. Why do YOU act the way you do? Who knows?

And I'll think you'll find women that DO act like that, assuming you're referring to interest in fashion, colorful personality, high-pitched voice, etc.

Yeah I know it wasn't the best choice of words, but I didn't know how else to put it. What I meant was like, there are clearly some gay men who I guess.."fit the stereotype" for a gay man and there are some that you'd never have guessed it. I'm interested in which the OP is.
