Do you own a webcam?

Here is a poll to put all those gullible "cat fishers" to rest. Do you own some sort of webcam, or if you met the person of your dreams online, would you use the money it would cost for one real life date to buy a webcam, so that you can have an infinite number of skype dates? or would you at least try to find a computer with a webcam to videochat with your crush at least once.

Yes, i own a webcam 31
No, i don't own a webcam, and don't plan on getting one 15
No, but i would buy one to video chat with a possible online crush. 3
No, but i would try to find a friend or public computer with one 1

    • This is one of my points. Any laptop bought within the last like 7 years has a webcam on it.

Really? That long? I didn't know that! Why have I been using this piece of crap, which was enterprise grade in 2006 but worth $199 in 2011?

I have a webcam built into my laptop and so does my husband. Even when I had an old shitty piece of shit E-Machines computer, I had a low quality webcam (that was so old that the website didn't even offer the driver anymore, no worries, I had the CD) that I could hook in.

I have seen people give the "I can't use it right now because people are here" excuse, but if I was given that excuse ALL OF THE TIME, I'd get suspicious.

No I don't own one and I would never. Part of it is that I would be kind of paranoid that I'd get a virus on my computer that would allow people to spy on me while I surf the internet naked.

But mostly I don't see myself ever socializing with someone that way.

I used to paranoid about getting speed on when I first bought my iPhone. I was very hesitant on being partially nude in my room when the phone was in plain view so, I'd flip it down. If I happened to be going to the toilet with my phone in pants pocket I'd been so worried that someone might spy on me:/ With time, my paranoia has lessened. I might have been slightly paranoid when I bought my laptop, but I think the odds of someone spying on me are pretty slim. However, my paranoia might just come back to me after reading all of these comments. O_0

I'm so glad someone else is paranoid about that...I thought it was just me :)

I've stuck a sticker over my laptop webcam so I don't have to worry :)

      • Haha! I've done the same thing, but it's a piece of masking tape instead of a sticker.

Electronic or not, it's still an eye.

I'm so glad other people do this. I feel less crazy, even though I still think it's irrational.

            • Nope. I actually made this poll to find out who has webcams. I've now done back traces on all of your IP's, hacked into your webcams, and adjusted the lens to bend light around those with objects obstructing the camera, and I can now see everything you all are doing.

There's one built into my laptop and I my other one also has one built in. Oh! My iPhone has face-time built into it. I'm yet to use either webcam or face-time. I would only video chat with someone I knew/trusted. I wouldn't video chat wanton with some random stranger I met.

I chose no. My laptop has a webcam built into it, but I have it covered up with stuff so no one can hack into it. :P

I know, I know. I'm weird. Get over it.

Last christmas was so freakin' wierd for me. My mum and my uncle had their laptop and ipad out with skype on. They got my cousin and 2 family friends on skype on each screen and propped them at either end of the table and they had christmas lunch with us from a remote location, talking to us over skype like they were at the table. At one point, the ipad and laptop screens were facing each other and my cousin and the family friends were having a conversation screen to screen. It was so weird and did my head in so much I had to leave the room.

My laptop is aparently the only one that doesn't have a cam built in, so I got an app for my iPhone to use it as a webcam, its a pain to get it to work, and when it does it has ads all over it, but if someone's showing me they're for real I feel I owe them the same

I have one at work for video-conferencing. I have one in the laptop at home and in the tabby. For technical reasons, neither were networkable so the webcams are cams as opposed to "web" cams. Now I've fixed the laptop, I do have a proper honest-to-goodness webcam. I'd probably use it if I could get the lighting right and it didn't make me look like a villain.

    • Hey computer-guy:
Do you know if creepy people can spy on innocent people (without them knowing) through the built-in video camera of their laptops?

Should charli.m and I remove our stickers from the little lens at the top of the laptop? Are we being too paranoid?

Technically, yes. Like with most hacking, it's unlikely in personal instances, though. You'd need to have attracted your own weirdo. The kind of person who is outside your bedroom window and is rooting through your bins.

As someone who could work out how to do this, I can't say it has ever crossed my mind. No harm in keeping the stickers there, though. There are people odder than me out there.

If something has a use that you limit (i.e. a webcam that isn't always on), someone else will find a way to delimit it if it's to their advantage.

You and charli.m are both popular here and, without wanting to sound paranoid, popularity is one reason for people wanting to learn more than they were invited to. I'm not saying people would. Just that it's always worth bearing in mind.

99% of people are lovely. But 1% of people aren't in that 99%.

            • disthing wrote a comment a few hours ago (on the "feelings" poll) about avoiding e-bunny boilers by not being particularly social on IIN.

I had no idea what a bunny boiler was; unfortunately, I do now. Sort of a scary thing if you're a man. Although I can certainly imagine it happening to females too - but, strangely, only at the hands of other obsessed females. I think males would be more straightforward in their stalking habits..

But I can see both sexes doing peeping, if they had the know-how and relaxed ethics.
