Do you notice the construction of new homes in your town?

  • My city has an urban growth boundary. It helps keep sprawl down and the farmland intact. Construction still happens but land developers have to get creative to support the population growth and accommodate the need for multi-function neighborhoods. However the fancy new condos that were built a few years ago still sit empty. People can't afford to live in them. And they want to build more? The streets are crowded, the houses empty, and businesses die everyday. I don't know what the solution is, but building more houses that people can't afford is not the solution.

And people should wonder where the materials come from. But I don't think many do. There is a business here that does professional deconstruction. They tear down buildings and houses and salvage everything they can. If you need to replace your bathroom sink, it is easy to find a used one. If you want to retile your floors, go explore the halls of used building supplies.
