I once saw a special about it and there was this janitor or doorman or something like that commenting "I used to love that show, it was a great comfort to be able to lie down at the end of the week and be calm that, no matter how bad my week went, Al's went a little worse". That pretty much sums up what that formulated sitcom relied on in order to catch the viewer, because if you think about it, the jokes are hardly any good. Not much artistic value there. There have been valuable comedies.
