I completed 1 & 2 when I was a kid. Couldn't complete Resident Evil 3: Nemesis though, that was hard.
I bought 4 and could have completed it, but I lost interest. Like you say, they've changed the format. It's no longer survival horror, it has become a third-person shooter.
Also I bought Silent Hill 1-4 recently and have been working through them. Completed 1, 2 and 3, but 4: The Room was awful so stopped trying. 4 seems to be the magic number... of shit.
I miss survival horrors. I hope they make a come back. I think a new, clever game with subtle psychological horror where you can't blow shit up would be great! Especially if it didn't fall back on that Japanese trope of having to salvage a million keys to open the millions of locked doors in a single level.
The next game I'm really looking forward to is The Last Of Us. It looks incredible! Also Beyond Two Souls looks interesting.
