      • Well I live on an island as well, Australia right on the bottom of it on the coast, not tasmania because them teeth missing hillbillies don't count.

How does that work anyway being part of the united kingdom? I mean we have tasmania but we don't let them be their own thing, we just let them be a state of australia.

        • It doesn't really work at all to be honest. Most people here would rather be part of an independent Ireland but some people want to remain part of the UK. The brits invaded Ireland a long time ago and a group called the IRA (Irish Republican Army) rebelled against them and regained independence in 1921 but the brits had placed a lot of British citizens in the north of Ireland so they kept 6 counties which became the state of Northern Ireland.

Ever since then there has been political violence and segregation here. Since 1968, around 3500 people have been killed in the conflict. There was a peace deal in 1998 and most of the more extreme violence has stopped since then but there are still dissident paramilitary groups here who carry out bombings and shootings etc mostly against the police and other British government organizations.

The neighbourhood where I live is probably the main place where they operate. If you go on youtube and search for "creggan, derry" you will find documentaries about it. Creggan is the name of the neighbourhood and Derry is the city.
