  • I like what they stand for, and I personally don't think all of their methods are as immoral as some people say. However, their methods are ineffective and counter-productive because they only serve to make themselves (and other animal rights causes) disreputable. They'd be better off taking a less controversial stand-point and being universally supported than an extreme one that is divisive.

I also think they could easily be victims of propaganda; not saying there isn't quite a bit of truth in some of the complaints about them, but it's become far too popular to hate PETA with the media for me to be able to trust everything that is said against PETA. The mainstream media is (to some extent) biased against PETA, no doubt about it.

As with all organisations, it has it's upsides and downsides. I like that they are against fur and cosmetic testing on animals, and I like that they are pro-vegetarianism. I dislike that their over-sized and under-funded animal rescue programme ends up putting down so many of the animals it takes into care.

I guess what it does best is what all organisations relying on shock value do best: raise awareness. Everyone's heard of PETA, and more people than ever know that animal right are a serious issue. What it doesn't do so well is directly helping solve the problem in any other way than awareness, or convert it's awareness into active supporters of the charity.
