This was actually really informative, thank you. I haven't encountered this yet, but in the future I'll definitely be more reserved if I'm on the receiving end of a ticket or even something more serious.
People are easily manipulated and it seems cops play them like a fiddle. Or try to.
Look at it this way...have you ever know a cop, who has been accused of a crime, to consent to a search, make any statement or talk to cops without a lawyer present? Nope. So if cops won't even do it, why the hell would you?
There's been, unfortunately, a few cops here in my small area that have been accused of some pretty serious crimes. None of them was without a lawyer or made a statement from day 1 of the investigation. Cuz they know the realness!
Please do!! These are your most basic but most important of Constitutional rights. It's very important to flex your rights any chance you get. Not because you're doing something wrong necessarily but to not use your rights to force the police to comply with the laws if nothing else. They're not used to people using these rights, and they take advantage of that sooooo much. Cops need to know their limits and respect your (and everyone's) rights, as it is now they don't respect our rights because people hardly ever invoke them. So police are on a power trip, and that's bad for everyone.
A lot of people feel like if they refuse a search, or ask for a lawyer, that it makes them 'look' guilty. Well, who cares what it looks like. You'll be much better off legally to use those rights. It may 'look' bad to other people, but to cops, it doesn't make a difference, they can't convict you on opinion, and what they thing of a person who refuses a search or lawyers up is, "that guy is smart, crap". Not "that guy is guilty".
Do you like cops?????
