Domesticated cats don't retain a pack-mentality, meaning they are all for one; themselves. They'll go off by themselves and in all likelihood won't miss you much. Dogs still have pack instinct, so if you ensure you're the dominant one, they genuinely want your affection and approval. They are excited to see you. They're higher maintenance because of this, though, and aren't as independent.
I bet a lot of these votes are swayed by what animal the voter grew up with.

I prefer dogs but I like cats too.
