Do you like 1970s furniture?

I know this question is a bit weird, but I've noticed that a lot of people seem to absolutely despise 1970s furniture, thinking it's the worst era ever for home design. What is your opinion on it?

Ah, when everything was the colour of poop and mustard.

    In short, fuck no.

I feel you're neglecting the smashed pea colour.

It's called avocado and it's essential in any 70s bathroom.

My parents had a full bathroom suite in this gross colour, complete with pink wall tiles and pink carpet.

I've noticed that most people who idolize 70s fashion were not there to experience it the first time around...

Some of it was good... and even considered classic now.

It was an era of great experimentation in designs and colors. Most did not work out; but, some are real works of art (and are even in art museums furniture collections (the art museums that cover furniture).

I can walk into any major furniture store today and show you designs that originated in the 1970's.

I love it! Much of my house is 60s-70s stuff. Art, knick knacks, furniture, lighting, cookware, dishes, everything I can find! I actually installed wood paneling in my basement recently and will be doing the same in my upstairs soon. I have a 70s jukebox even, in my 70s bar!

Nice! I have a mid-'60s house that is mostly original (and very clean, too; I really lucked out!), has wood paneling in many of the rooms (4 different kinds, too), and still has the original coppertone stove/oven and range hood! I absolutely love it and am so glad it wasn't "modernized" to be staged for sale, because I had hoped for a dated home that was still in good condition since I love the look. I was actually planning to install wood paneling if the house I ended up buying didn't have it, and I also have some cool vintage furniture, knick knacks (mostly family heirlooms), light fixtures, dishes, and cookware as well! I'm still trying to find a coffee table and end table set that looks like it belongs, too.

Awesome! I love looking at time capsule houses. My house was built in 1980 and it's just a plain basic box so I'm doing what I can to give it a 70s flair.

I wish you could get colored appliances these days. I have a 60s double oven that I got at a thrift store but it's white...still better than the new ones though. The rest of my major appliances are stainless but if I could have harvest gold or avocado green, I would love that!

I actually "made" 2 coffee tables for my house. One was a vintage orange wakeboard from Cypress Gardens in FL (they were famous for their water-skiing shows), I took the footholds off, filled the screw holes and put some mid-century tapered legs on it. The other one was a round kitchen table, woodgrain formica top and a metal pedestal base. I cut down the pedestal to coffee table height and it's perfect. I love woodgrain formica! I was able to get the table and the wakeboard for only a few dollars total but I think they look pretty fucking decent now. I like repurposing stuff.

I love time capsule houses as well and am happy mine was so well preserved! It's not very common to see a house at least a few decades old with most of the original features, and also still in great condition.

I love colored appliances and wish they were still available as well. They are so much fun! I love color and anything that is eye catching and decorative, so the more color, the better IMO! I have a bathroom with an avocado green bathtub, sink, and toilet as well!

The coffee tables you made sound so cool! I bet they look awesome! I might have to learn how to do something similar!

How about we grill some steaks, drink some bourbon and listen to Mötley Crüe instead? I'll wear a dress....I guess.

im talkin about the first night

the second night you dress like twiggy and i dress like robert plant while in a gadda divita plays in the background as we have fondue and drop acid

the third night i dress in a giant suit like robert byrne and you wear a madonna getup and we have champagne brie & caviar in an obnoxiously ostentatious limo with eddie grant blastin

the fourth night we dress in shitty flannel and dine on pesto covered pasta & drink obscure craft beer and smoke cigars to the tune of a beck marathon

by the fifth night i give up on decade based dinner esthetics and we have steak bourbon & motley crue

It has it's own vintage aesthetic, but I'm more into 80s aesthetics.

I love it, as well as the interior decor of that decade. I've actually been wanting to find one of those borderline gaudy coffee table/end table sets with the hexagon end tables and the coffee table that has the cabinets in the middle (if that makes sense). I love how everything used to be so decorative. Everything modern just seems to be so plain and blah.

    Wood panelling was pretty bad.

There was some really terrible stuff done in the 80s. I would rather have 70s furniture if given a choice between those two decades.

I actually love wood paneling, it is one of my favorite features in a house! Of course, the higher quality, real wood kind is much better than the veneer, but I still think it has a really cozy look to it. Really, I love as much natural wood as possible in a house and hate this trend of painting over it (and painting over natural brick as well).

I don't appreciate cozy much... things tend to clutter in my home, so having dirt colored walls just exacerbates the problem.

I see. I'm the opposite, lol. I love coziness, but it drives me nuts if things get too cluttered and I HAVE to put them away or I will feel like I'm going insane!

The colors are bland at best or at worst reminiscent of puke.

Modern at least keeps to neutral colors or colored highlights. It's going to age slightly better than prints.

Just like bell bottoms, instamatic cameras, and 8 track tapes, it’s short lived and better off forgotten. I had all 3 btw, and the cheap furniture too.
