  • I give money to the government. The government gives it to them.

    • you mean welfare? I hate the fact that people who work don't have a choice in that.

  • No I don't, I work hard for what money I have and I'm not going to give it to some stranger who I simply don't give a shit about, my taxes already probably go to a load of cretins.

  • homeless peoples give me money what the way I look

  • Nope.

The homeless people in my town are chronically homeless. Their situation never changes.

Our welfare system in the UK, paid for by our taxes, is designed to give those destitute or in trouble the support they need - the support to survive with a view to eventually becoming self-sufficient.

So for homeless people to fall through that net, and stay beneath it, I assume there has to be a serious behavioural problem, either addiction or mental health problems. Even then, our health services have support facilities to tackle them. Ultimately, if they shun the help of the facilities our taxes pay for, I don't see the point in chucking them a few pennies.

I'd rather my money went to a worthy charity.

  • If they have nice shoes, no. Chances are, if they have enough money to buy nice shoes, they have enough money to buy food. There was a guy who used to wait by the corner on my way to school, though. He had tubes up his next and everything. I guess he could've been faking it too, but the dude looked legit, so I gave him money a few times. I guess I try to use my best judgment in these situations.

  • There's a newspaper in this country which is made for homeless people to sell, and I sometimes buy that. There was a period where it happened more often that I gave some coins. Then, my thought was that they got more happiness out the money than I.

I once heard someone comment on how people complained that the money would be used for drugs or alcohol, saying 'well, yeah, what you do if you where homeless?'. I agree with that.

  • I stopped giving cash to homeless people a LONG time ago due to the fact that ALL of the homeless I've ever run into were rude. I never carry cash, just a debit card to pay for stuff, so instead of giving them cash, I'd go into the store and get them something to eat. I always wound up getting cursed out by the people I tried to help. Turns out most of them were lying about wanting money for food. They only wanted the money for beer, cigarettes, or drugs. I can also recall a few moments from ages ten to fifteen where stinky, dirty, homeless guys would try to flirt with my sister and I. YUCK!

    • wow those are some ungrateful people.
Once we were on a school trip to Baltimore(lots of homeless) and this old homeless guy, an obvious drunk, kept asking us for cash. My goofy friend finally gave him her half-eaten McDonalds fries and he started swearing at us lol.

  • I like to give them money, but I know that they're just going to run away and buy drugs. Unfortunately, my cousin is homeless and he is genuinely trying to turn his life around. So, it's hard for me to say no when I know that there are some homeless people that are just a victim to circumstance.

  • I am currently without a job myself and if it weren't for the generosity of my parents I would be on the street. I don't get very much money but when I do have some I will give a couple of dollars or a food gift card. I once bought a man some bread, cheese, and soup.

  • I used to. But I moved downtown and walk almost everywhere so I'd be broke so fast if I gave every wise ass a dollar or smoke that asks for one. There are SO many homeless people down here. They line the sidewalk by the park at night. At least 50 of em in that one spot. I always feel guilty as hell walking by them wishing I could help... Then I look down at my ipad and get nauseous. I could probably feed these people for a month for what this thing costs... (FWP?)

  • I give to a free breakfast program and to a thrift store that gives clean and free clothing to the poor and homeless.

  • A dollar or so, yes.
But I don't flood them with money.

  • No i don't cause they most likely use it for drugs. They should try getting a job and earn their own money. If they're mentally ill then they should get help.

  • I have given them food items, rarely money. Most of the ones I have helped seemed glad to get the food so maybe they weren't looking to buy drugs. Its sad because a lot of times I see a whole family with kids having "help" signs and I get stuff the kids will like.
Once I bought dog food for a homeless guy with a big dog, he seemed really happy about it.

    • Lucky you. There are actually grateful homeless people in your neck of the woods.
      :)
Unfortunately, I get a few of those people in the shopping area I work in. My sister who happened to be a manager at one of the shops has offered these people jobs on separate occasions and ALL their answers were along the lines of:
"I don't wan't to work at (insert store name here)!"
      or
"Why would I want to work here?!"
I found out later that some of them turned out to be scammers.
I honestly can't have sympathy for whole families anymore either because of it. I probably seem like a negative douchebag for thinking that.
