Monthly direct debits, standing orders etc.. A girl stopped me in the street and told me that this is how most people give to charity nowadays. I thought there's nobody better to ask than you guys!
I support a human rights organisation via a monthly direct debit. Most charities prefer receiving regular (albeit small) sums to random one-off donations because it helps them with their budgeting and planning activities and campaigns. I also donate things I no longer need to a charity shop.
Please sir, have pity. Perchance a day may come when I may draw breath without the sweet, sweet sustenance of attention, but for now it is necessary for survival. Without it my withered body will desiccate like a pear left in the sun, and all that will be left is a pile of ashen sadness. What you call "trolling" is my only means to live. I beseech thee once more... have pity, sir. Have pity.
I don't donate through charities because I'm heartless.. and pretty darn broke. I do give quarters to street musicians, though. I love them.
On rare occasions, I give to random beggars. The ones that play my heartstrings- like the kid crying next to a pay phone or the honest old man with no teeth who admits, "I just want one more sip of whiskey before I die."
Charity is business and corruption. What you thought those who manage big charities like oxfam or greenpeace don't do it for power? Think of the huge purchasing power they have when they buy goods and services for the 'victims' they help. I'm sure it rains kickbacks.
I'm not anti-corporate on the contrary but at least do business openly for profit rather than under the guise of charity and by inducing guilt onto the masses. I'll never give a cent.
Excellent points. I especially hate telethons and commercials from actors/actresses asking people to give money.
How ethical is it for hypocritical actors/actresses to ask working folks (most of whom can't come close to even 1% of a wealthy actor's annual income) to donate money to charitable causes? Unconscionable.
If you took 30-50 of the highest grossing actors who want more publicity than they normally get by going out of their way to be seen on telethons and commercials/ads, and had them each donate 1-10 million of their money to charities themselves, you'd have plenty of $$ to support charitable causes, without gauging the little guy.
Buffet, Oprah, Gates, Jobs,the Walton family, Ellison, Bloomberg, for example, could probably pool their money and create jobs for the jobless, help more poor and homeless people in the US (but greed is good)....
They'd rather "make the masses feeling guilty", as you say...unFUCKINGbelievable...
I do not. I need to finish paying off my student loans first. I release a lot of frustration when I shred the mail asking me to donate to my schools. WTF I am still paying you fuckers with interest and you want more on top of that? Additionally, the majority of what you give to charity goes to overhead costs such as salaries... a small percent goes to actually doing something....I prefer to volunteer and give of my time. I can feel assured of direct results that way.
I donate to our local food bank whenever I can. That's pretty much it. But if I had enough to donate to other places, I would.
I try to give a little to the bell ringers at Christmas time too. I try to remember to thank them for volunteering too. I'm sure it gets cold standing outside in December.
I like to think that I will when I get a job and become self-sufficient. NEVER give money to anyone begging in the streets. I had a relative that did that, then he went straight to his heroin dealer. Give to small, local charities or really important international ones where you can be absolutely sure where your money is going.
