Do you believe your parents have a "favorite" kid?

Self-explanitory....if you have siblings, do you think your parents (or whoever raised you) favored one child over another?

Please comment!!

Who was the favorite? (you?, a younger? or an older? sibling, favor a boy over a girl? etc...)

How did your parents show favoritism?

How do you handle it?

How has it affected you?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • My parents admit that they favoured my sister because she was a girl and my brother because he was the youngest. In retrospect, I wasn't really like one of their kids. I was just someone who lived there, like the dog. They let me do my own thing (in fairness to them, my brain went at a million miles an hour, and I don't think anyone could have put up with that for long). I've always existed pretty much independently of my family to the point where nowadays I don't really have a family.

Whether that's because of favouritism or some failing in myself, who knows? It's a complicated situation.

  • My parents deffinately favoured my brother, he never could do nothing wrong. He was their pride and joy. They kicked me out of the nest when I was fourteen because I was not doing good in school and I was not the type of daughter they wanted; {A girlie girl}; and I turned out to be a Tom-Boy. My brother was a 4.0 student, the personality they liked and had proper manners.

The way I handled it is, I told them at fourteen that they can go and jump into the nearest lake and drowned themselves and have not spoken to them in nearly 42 years and never plan on talking to them. And when my parents croak I will be too busy to attend their funerals.

  • fuck yes they do. My younger bro doubled majored in engineering/finance, just finished a summer internship at a great company, has traveled to atleast 10 countries now.

Then there is me who is just an average dude tryin to get by.
Based on the American culture and its values they have no choice but to like my bro more than me.

Thank god being a genius and having tons and tons of money doesnt really matter in the bigger scheme of things.

      • Why don't you just go do something with your life as well? Maybe you would be more fulfilled, rather than just resenting your brother for being successful.

        • i am doing something. I'm teaching english in South fuckin Korea. Not exactly a career job imo. It's not easy to pick a successful career and just run with it. Many factors involved.

  • I don't think that they deliberately did, but because I was the first child of two, I always felt that my younger brother has done better than me at most things because my parents learned what did and didn't work when they were raising me.

  • My older sister is always most favorite, so I am angry enough to throw out the first letter of her name:K. She's always hanging around my mom, talking to her, and being extremely helpful for her. Also, at night, when our mom sends us to bed at 8:00 pm, K. always gets to stay up with her. I've been under lots of depression lately, and I think most of it is because of her..and she's just ONE year older than me!!!! Ugh.. Sorry, I forgot that this isn't a “pout” website! Anyway, I don't think I'll ever be able to fix this problem until a handsome, strong, young man comes to carry me away to a beautiful castle..

  • Many parents do, but I don't think mine do.

  • My mother definitely favours my little sister. Not that she seems to do that on purpose, but they just have a lot more in common. I'm more similar to my Dad. Though he seems to be indifferent to both of us..

  • yes they have, me :D

  • i KNOW my father favors my little sister!!! i think its cause shes like the baby... every time he know me and my sis are like together hanging out or something like tht he call me, right so i answer and he says : "hi, how are you is your sister around? can i talk to her?"
and im like WTF then call HER! And me and my mo fight like ALOT!! so sometimes im her favorite because in like older and wiser but other times she just cant stand to look at me!! :(

  • I admit, it's me. I know it.

My older brother has anger problems and is a straight D student with one A. I'm straight A with one B.

I always get more presents on Christmas and my birthday and I got a phone at 13 while he got one at 16.

I definitely have to admit I'm a huge suck up to my parents.

  • My dad favours me over my brother (he was 3mths old when parents split, I was 2, so dad 'knows' me better or that's his excuse...reality is, he's a prick). He favours my little sister (with his current wife) over me, which is fine by me, only I feel bad for my sister being stuck with him.

My mum favours my brother, presumably subconciously to balance out my dad...though theres a shift now that we're older and my brother ignores her for months at a time.

My grandmother, who raised us, seems to hate my brother a lot of the time. I'm more like her, so while we had a lot of disagreements, I think I fared better with her than my brother did.

  • Oh yeah. I'm my dad's favourite because I'm easier to get along with (my sister's a bitch), and my sister is my mum's favourite because they're very much alike in terms of personality.

  • my dad favors me over my brother and it annoys me so much! I tell him not to but he does anyway! I am a very fair person and it annoys me! :/

  • Yes! They favor my sister. She plays 3 sports for the school, works hard on homework, and is funny. I just get good grades and stay out of their way.

  • equal cause one favored one child and the other favored the other child

  • Yeah, its definitely my sister. My mom jumps at the thought of just a phone call from her. If my mom says shes going somewhere(shopping) and I ask if I can come she gets all pissy and says no. But when its just her and my sister she gets all excited. And if I come too, all hell breaks loose. They end up going off to do there own thing and just disappear on me. I end up spending most of my time wondering where the hell they went. I'm not even joking! Sad but true. Both my father and brother even say she does it. Its been that way for years. I'm the youngest.

  • My father favours me because I'm the baby and my mother my older sister for god knows why.

  • My parents constantly reminded me that they love all of us equally. But I don't think they reminded my siblings as often. They must have thought I needed reassurance. I was always the dumb one and so obviously the "bad" child when compared to my brother and sister. But I kind of went out of my way to not be like them.

  • I gave two siblings and I can honestly type that my parents never favored one over the other, even though I'm the red sheep of the family.

  • My mom went back and forth between me and my sister. I was the smarter, less annoying kid. My sister always complained and was always trying to get something from my mom. My brother is 4 years older and doesn't really want the crown as favorite (probably because he knows my sister will throw a fit if not paid attention to).
My family is a little fucked up. I'm the youngest and what seems to be, the most responsible.
