What do you think about the old saying that "there's no such thing as a stupid question"?
Personally, I think it's horseshit. Complete and utter horseshit. Some stupid guy who asked a lot of dumb questions must have made it up to feel better about himself.

It's better to ask a stupid question than to say nothing and then make a stupid mistake.
It is better to ask the stupid question, have that stupidity or such mentality refuted or clarified, rather than the person in his mind continue to have that stupid mentality of flawed obscured logic
There are no stupid questions asked when the reason is that you don't know something.

Since the saying refers to question made with the aim of information gain, i'd have to go with "It's true, there is no such thing as a stupid question.".
If you want to see it as univseral thing(not the intent) and include people who obviously act moronic to troll their environment, then the saying becomes false(though basically only through twisting it's intent).
What people say at my job is, the only stupid question is a question not asked.
But I do believe there are some totally dumb assed stupid questions, like, a customer had a BEAN bag and she said, what do you fill it up with.... air??? I felt like saying OMG you stupid fuck, it clearly says BEAN BAG!!! People like that make me wanna blow my brains out.

I was given the same quote by a physics teacher. His intent was for people not to feel stupid by asking something that might be obvious. If they learn something by asking, it's not a stupid question. If they somehow discover, say, a Grand Unified Theory, by asking what everyone else was afraid to ask, it's most certainly not stupid.
I work in an analytical field now. If you don't ask the "stupid" questions and get them out of the way, you are stupid for not doing so because one of them might have held a truth you later ignore.

There may be a question that's been answered a million times over, but that's still not a stupid question.
I dunno, I'm a fan of trial and eror. I have a lot more respect for someone who makes logical conclusions, and sees them through, whether they are valid or not, than some dope who asks a question that could be easily found out by reason or just trying it out.
I think people learn better that way anyway, let them make mistakes, even stupid mistakes, and I'd bet they'd never make the same mistake again, whereas if they just asked someone they'd probably make the same mistake anyway because it wouldn't be learned the same as if they went through it themselves..
I think we were talking about two different things. Yeah, I think people learn better when they work out the answer themselves rather than just ask.
In my mind, though, I saw a kid standing in front of a nuclear reactor asking whether it was hot inside. That's partially what I was thinking when I answered your question. I wouldn't expect to kid to go and get a degree in nuclear physics, but someone could answer the question in such a way to really excite someone's imagination.
People don't always learn better by making mistakes. Sometimes mistakes can help you learn, but sometimes they just send you completely off course, particularly if you've misunderstood something fundamental. If we're talking about physics, you might not realise your final answers are wrong. If you're using them to, say, build a bridge or fix a car, that mistake can cost lives, and how well you learned from it becomes somewhat irrelevant. Even seemingly obvious questions can be necessary for confirmation. The answers can tell you whether or not you're thinking about something correctly.
Stupid questions exist, but there's also the occasional "blonde moment."
Well, in a way, If you ask a question, you're obviously thinking.
BUT if you're one of those kids sitting in a classroom whether it be for high school or whatever, it can be stupid. Like, the teacher tells the entire class something and you stupidly ask a question about something she just answered..that my friend is a stupid question. (:
I think there are not stupid people but yes, there are stupid questions. Stupidity is an adjective that describes people who know and not care.

I think it means that by "there is no such thing s a stupid question" it means that if someone asked the question, they are asking something they don't know, and when it's answered, they learned something new, so for them it wasn't a stupid question, just like at one point you didn't know the question.
I just listen to what someone has to say and try not to judge them. Everyone has their reasons.....unless it is an obvious ploy to fuck with someone just feed their curiousity.

However most people classify questions as "stupid" when they don't know the answer to it or don't want to think about it.

In the case of gaining knowledge, questions may sound stupid, but they're certainly not stupid to the one asking them.
