Do you believe there really is global warming?

I hear all these agruements on how global warming exists and doesn't exist. What do you think about the subject?

Not to offend anybody but it normally seems to be the potheads who believe in global warming, not all are potheads; but "most".

Unless -every- scientist I've heard of is lying, it certainly exists. Are certain things things about it exaggerated more than others? Well, sure; but it doesn't mean it's all a lie. Actually, it usually means some key points are true, but the outer layers of that truth are rough.

I am personally opposed to any scientific facts that are corroborated by extensive empirical research and cannot be logically disputed.

For example, I choose to believe that deep fried snickers are the elixir of life, and that my tinfoil hat grants me the power to conjure elven minions. Those elves make a wicked tasty deep fried snickers meal.

its not called global warming anymore, its called climate change because the climate is changing in its NATURAL CYCLE and the government want to profit from nature like they do with everything. damn shame it is though.

What is often overlooked, is that we are technically still in an Ice Age. This is just an interglacial period. Yes, the climate is warming, but how much of that is due to our activities? The climate also warmed during the Medieval Warm Period, when we had little impact on global climate. It then cooled during the Little Ice Age, which lasted until about 1850. The climate has been warming ever since. Highly dubious that our early industrial activities had much impact on this.
The problem is, that most of our advanced civilizations have developed in an Ice Age climate. We need to adapt to a warming climate, should this trend continue.
I think that the resources being used for 'global warming' would be much better used if they were simply diverted to reducing our population. Still, we should strive for becoming more energy efficient, but this should be left for individuals and the private sector to accomplish. The governments role would then be limited to public awareness, education and providing incentives to become more energy efficient.
If we can reduce our population by half and continue to become more energy efficient through technology and development of energy efficient societies, then our so-called carbon footprint would once again become negligible. We need a political willingness to do this. The problem is that the politicians today are greedy, corrupt and afraid to offend certain groups.

Should read most politicians, above. The problem is that the current system corrupts well-intentioned individuals.

  • It's like the theory of evolution, it's got holes in it but it doesn't mean it's wrong.

I believe in both, not firmly but more than the alternatives.

There is no doubt whether or not the Earth is warming, a mountain of data supports this. That part of it is not opinion, it is fact.

The influence humans have on it is the debatable part.

Well there's certainly something going on with the climate. Where I live there is hardly a winter anymore, maybe about 3-5 weeks of bad weather while even just 20-30 years ago we'd see 3-4 months of it. The summers are drier and warmer than they've ever been. People are successfully growing crops here now that was never thought imaginable.
I'm no pothead either FYI, So if you have a better explanation then lets hear it?

No In the sense that the earth is not warming up. It should be called 'climate change'. Some places are getting colder and some hotter.

The thing is though, we need to treat this planet better. Not only for our future generations, but also for our own future lives.

yep. i believe global warming exists. Why not pick up some book and do some research?
    PEACE!

  • Ok I should of put it more clearly. I ment more towards that people cause global warming, which I don't believe much of. But I do believe people need to become more efficient and less wasteful.

I believe it's just nature that causes it. Like volcano eruptions, the fact that earth revolves around the sun, of course earthquakes causing land to move and other natural disasters.

Volcanos I can kind of understand, but I'm curious why you think the earth moving around the sun or earthquakes have been causing changes in the climate?

Well earthquakes can cause the propagation of "new" land which absorbs vs reflects solar radiation, leading to an increase in mean global temperature, but honestly, that is a minute contributor at best.

I had recently done a lot of research on what is happening on this planet. There are many different opinions on the matter, basically those who are saying that we should save our planet and humans are at fault for the worlds drastic climate change are really being over dramatic. Extremists jump on the bandwagon and are spreading the word that we should do something about our environment and claim that we are the cause of our planet dying, without proper evidence and research.
The earth naturally goes through different phases in climate over millions of years. On one article it says that the earth is still coming out of the ice age hence the earth getting hotter each year. Another scientist claims that there was a spike in temperatures like this a few hundred years ago and the temperatures will most likely cool again around 2030.
From what I gathered from many different sources I read through is that the earth is definitely getting hotter although modern industrial necessities only affect it slightly.

It comes down to whether or not I am inclined to believe scientific information I can't personally duplicate and verify. Sometimes I do.

I have no doubts that global warming is real. some people say that it is a natural process that has happened many times before while others say it is caused by humans, I don't know who is right.

What I know for sure is that I can feel it; where I live, it rains far more than it used to and cold days are less common than before

The way I tend to look at it is if 95% of oncologists told me they strongly believed I had cancer, then I would get treatment. When a similar figure of climate scientists says there's strong evidence not only of a warming climate but the cause is anthropogenic then I tend to believe them.

  • I believe in it. The weather is screwed up where I live as well, one winter we had no snow whatsoever, not a single speck. And I live in the north of England, famous for rain and cold weather!

I think it does. When I can walk outside and get a sunburn in less than 20 minutes, there has to be something wrong with the ozone. Just look at satellite images on Google showing the ozone layer over the years. You will see a giant gaping hole that is only getting worse. What about the polar bears that are drowning? Don't you feel bad for them? Don't be a polar bear murderer!

Something is happening. The earth does go through phases. Where I live, the seasons are all screwy, they are nothing like they used to be. Last winter was so mild, it was insane. Yet the one before that, we were buried in several feet of snow and ice for months. I'll just add that I miss the thunderstorms. They used to last all night or all day or both. Now when the weather tells me thunderstorm is coming, I know it will only last a few minutes and there probably won't even be any thunder and lightning. I'm always right about that :(
