Do you believe that we all wear masks?

Do you think that the you you think is the real you (the one you see in the mirror everyday) is nothing more than a mask and the true you is deep inside you but you can't reach your true identity? Have you ever wondered that maybe we're not who we seem to be?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • I think the mask is a very pessimistic metaphor to use. We project different parts of ourselves in different social situations, but all of those are genuine parts of us. If they aren't parts of us, where did they come from? If they are different characters, we must have invented them for ourselves and that makes them part of us. A mask suggests you are hiding yourself for something that isn't really you. I think of it more like a filter; everything you show is unavoidably you, but you pick and choose which parts of it you show.

I believe everyone owns and constructs their own identity every day and with every action. Identity is a work in process, and it stays that way until you die. Identity doesn't have an objective reality which we strive to replicate in our actions, but it is constantly being forged *by* those actions.

    • Bloody hell, are you a wordsmith or something? You pretty much articulated every thought in my head in a clean, crisp manner.

      • Thank you very much :) It's fairly closely related to some things I've been reading for my Social Psychology module at university - which probably makes me more articulate about it than I am most topics - but mostly it's the sort of thing I often think about anyway.

  • Of course we all do. Different social situations call for different actions. I don't act the same around my friends and bosses. But are either of those the real me? Nope...unless you just mean physical appearance..then no :)

  • Yes, we all have different "masks" in different aspects of our lives. Most of us don't show who we are in general, or ever really show what we're like 100% in any situation.

We live by a certain set of rules that prohibit us from being who we "really" are in any situation.

I think we have a better understanding of ourselves simply in mind, not even saying it vocally, but we know who we are.

Personally, at a young age, I, and this may sound weird, made this little version of me called "Smiles". I wear too many masks in life and I think I felt that I needed some form of way to keep in mind who I really am, and it's become a bit weird as rather than me seeing it as "me", I see this imaginary self of my naked face as a different persona entirely, so much so that I have quite a lot of mental conversations that tend to conflict in a weird way. Maybe it is justdue to my overactive mind, but sometimes out of the blue I will "think" I see this persona in the same environment as me, and rather than think about that persona's point of view, I tend to see it as another person entirely's point of view.

  • I don't know about mask, I think more of it being a shell, and that you are on inside of it.
And when we die, we leave the shell behind and our souls go wherever we believe they go.

Wow I didn't know I could think that deep... Thanks man, I've learnt a lot about myself from this! *thumbs up* :)

  • Depends on the situation. People aren't one dimensional, we're act depending on many factors. For example, sometimes you'll hear people say that they're shy at first but a complete weirdo when you get to know them. Are either of those sides fake? No, they're just different parts. I'm sure we all wear masks, like say when you're at work have to act like you want to be there. But then there are other masks. Overall, I guess you can say that we do and don't. It just depends on the situation.

  • Masks...no. Expressions yes. We portray how we feel by changing our expressions almost constantly for that reason never trust a woman who has been Botoxed

  • Well, I have a million different characters and they are all part of me. We all have a version of ourselves but different parts are at work depending on the situation. In the end these pieces are what makes someone. Putting them together is unlocking the puzzle of who you really are. No one acts exactly the same in any social situation.

  • I wouldn't put it as masks, if what you are referring to is like lc1988 put it. People have different colors for different moods, different situations call for different colours. I think of people with "masks" as people who hide their true colours (original analogy there) and put on colours that others put on, trying to fit in. I fancy myself this way.
