Yeah. It makes sence. If I were to include everyone I know including people on the internet and people I havent seen in years, I probably know about 3,000 people. To the 6th power you will know 72900000000000000000 people if everyone were to know that many people without them overlapping. Now obviously they will overlap. On average most people know 100 people well enough that they play an important role in their lives. Even 100 to the sixth power is a trillion. That is still about 15 times the world population, but when you take into account the overlaps, the 6th degree rule comes out just about right.
At last, somebody does the math. The 6th power of 44 = 7,256,313,856 which is close to the world population. Most people know 44 people. But, I don't think there's enough overlap to get from me to everyone in mainland China. I would guess 6 degrees of separation gets 90% of people to 90% of the world's population.
You only need to get to one person there to get to everyone. The overlap isn't as much of a big deal because most people know way more than 44 people. I know people in China so if you count people you know of online you have already started to spread there through 2 people.
Do you believe in six degree of separation?
