I'm not sure exactly. I've seen couples fall in love only to have it break apart and remarry to another so if that illusory entity does exist it has the capacity to manifest itself in anyone we know and not just in one "soul mate".
Something tells me though that love is more or less the effort between two compatible human beings to make a relationship work.
