If you believe in it, please explain why and if you don't believe in it, please explain that too. Thanks, guys.

You brag on the internet about your masturbatory habits, then you put a picture of yourself on your profile.
          Not a very smart choice...

Overpopulation means "too many people". Any statement involving the words "too many" without any qualification, is going to be subjective. "Too many" for what? "Too many" to prevent a significant negative impact on other species? "Too many" to be sustainable living in the same way we currently do in future generations? And what do all these questions even mean? Overpopulation has as many meanings as there are people to give meaning to it, and what you think about it depends a lot on which meaning you choose.

You can think about overpopulation in different two ways. Having a lot of people is only a problem if you don't have the resources to cope with that number of people sustainably and ethically. One person can say that that a situation is an example of overpopulation, but another person can say the same situation is an example of under-resourcing and be equally accurate.

I therefore admit I am not qualified to answer this question. And I don't think anyone else is either, although I hope they try :P

I can easily say there isn't a soul on here who could win a debate against you about the environment.

What he said. :) Personally, I am completely unconcerned about it. If things do get out of control, the wars fought over resources will knock it back down again.

As long as the can support the 7 billion humans thats OK with me. In Europe and North America, thousands of tons of food is wasted every day while at the same time thousands of people in Africa all depend in food aid

Isn't that like asking if you believe the sun will shine tomorrow? "Human Overpopulation" is not an opinion or belief, it is already a fact that there is not enough food, clean water and clean air for everybody on this planet.
    What's not to believe?

There's easily enough food for everyone on the planet. It's just in the wrong places. Food waste and horribly inefficient use of land in farming is the problem there, not overpopulation.

No, it's not like asking if you believe the sun will shine tomorrow.

Human overpopulation is not fact, because what constitutes overpopulation entirely depends on what factors you're measuring.

If you determine overpopulation by sustainability based on resources i.e. if there are enough resources the world over to sustain the current human population. Which means there is not currently human overpopulation.

If you determine it by looking on a smaller scale at individual communities where population density is effecting the ability of a community to thrive, then there is human overpopulation in certain areas, and underpopulation in others.

If you determine it based upon our impact on the environment, wildlife etc. then that would depend on what environmental aspects you value most highly, in which case it's a personal opinion as to whether there is overpopulation.

      And so on.

I believe in it and I've become increasingly alarmed in my country at the birth rates. It seemed that everytime I went onto facebook someone else had babies photos up/was pregnant etc. I speak to alot of women who tell me they plan to have 3 or more children. And I can't help but be alarmed and wonder how our world's resources can cater for this influx.

The world’s human population doubled from 1 to 2 billion between 1800 and 1930, and then doubled again by 1975. At the end of 2011, it went past 7 billion. This staggering increase and the massive consumption it drives are overwhelming the planet’s finite resources such as oil, which we're running out of fast and don't have a plan.

We’ve already witnessed the devastating effects of overpopulation on biodiversity: Species abundant in North America two centuries ago — from the woodland bison of West Virginia and Arizona’s Merriam’s elk to the Rocky Mountain grasshopper and Puerto Rico’s Culebra parrot — have been wiped out by growing human numbers.

As the world’s population grows unsustainably, so do its unyielding demands for water, land, trees and fossil fuels — all of which come at a steep price for already endangered plants and animals. Most biologists agree we’re in the midst of the Earth’s sixth mass extinction event; species are disappearing about 1,000 times faster than is typical of the planet’s history. This time, though, it isn’t because of geologic or cosmic forces but unsustainable human population growth.

Today’s global human population is over 7 billion. Every day, the planet sees a net gain of roughly 250,000 people. If the pace continues, we’ll be on course to reach 8 billion by 2020 and 9 billion by 2050. I think the only solution now is to learn how to crowd surf!!

But seriously now by any ecological measure, we have exceeded our sustainable population size. Just a single human waste product — greenhouse gas — has drastically altered the chemistry of the planet’s atmosphere and oceans, causing global warming and ocean acidification.

Yea! When i get older i realydont know if i wNt kds or not because theres so many nice innocent children in foster homes that would love to be in the hands of a careing parent! I meen, why waste my time getting fat ,cramps, the pain of having a baby, and the very thought of another human inside of me FREAKS me out!! But the thing is, when is the right time to tell your child that they are adopted? I know it would break your yrust with them and they would hate you!! But i would rather do that than die giving birth to some one (not trying to be selfish but seriously omg if u see some one on a movie giving birth it looks painful) and not to mention all the pills u might have to take to stop the pain of that child kicking the crap out of you in your tummy!! And also i find todlers very irritating.. I know they dont know anything, but OMG u tell them to stop, its like they go full retard and start crying it just annoys the hell outta me

Yeah of course. This planet only has so many resources, at some point, even if everything is evenly distributed to everyone, at some point there wont be enough for everyone.

You cant seriously be asking this question. Anyone who doesn't believe in it is a moron since it exists. That is a fact. This is how it works. When we have too many of a species and too little resources between them all people start dying. You learn how this works in biology. OP you clearly never finished school or you would know this. This site is not for minors! So pick up your biology book!

Overpopulation doesn't just mean too many people. It also means too little resources and too much pollution for and from those people. There is plenty of space.

Asians are the majority of the world population, number in the billions and are very generously numerically represented outside of their home continent. Almost all population growth has come from the third world in the last half century. Yet we on the other side of the world, where most people can't be bothered anymore to so much as replace themselves, we worry about population growth.

Humans do great things, but they can't stop doing nasty things. Since we are on an irreversible march to our own extinction, let's do something great (to a neighboring planet, perhaps) so our species is remembered.

I admit, in all probability, our species has an expiry date - whether it be by our own hand or someone/thing else's.

I don't think it's inevitable that our demise will be a consequence of our actions/inactions necessarily.

But who do you think will remember our species when we're gone?

Also, don't you think we've already done something great? We've overcome massive adversity to reach the top of the food chain and proliferate. We've created art, music, literature, complex language, morality... I think we're pretty amazing animals and what we've done to get this far is an impressive legacy.

I adamantly agree. But civilization is still not at the top of its game. We could terraform planets, at least seed the atmosphere of Venus with "sinker and floater" GMO microbes. Material sciences, ocean colonization still have far to go.

The clock is ticking, let's all get to work.

OK... I've got a bottle of Diet Coke and some Mentos.

I'll sit on the top and when I'm propelled to Venus I'll sprinkle some yeast across the surface and wait.

I'll take my mobile phone so I can call you when the mission is complete.

              Over and out.
