See, Spinoza's god is an excellent scientific verification (sort of) for the existence of god...in the same way the cycle of carbon-based life is an excellent scientific verification of the existence of reincarnation. Yes...your cremated great grandmother is part of the condoms you wear when you fuck your significant other...and the coffee mug you drink out of, and so on and so forth...
Problem is, Spinoza's god is theoretically understandable, leading a lot of people to jump the gun and say they know everything about "god", even though they don't. This is why (i think) people still cling to intangible gods. Gods of the mind that are ephemeral need to be recreated and reaffirmed every day. The energy expenditure of that kind of creation makes for a personal (dare we say, jealous?) relationship that fuels a personal sense of self worth and community worthiness. I think these models for regulating the ego have been misappropriated (hence an athiest's call for the destruction of false ideology).
do you believe in God?
