Yes. I was spanked and it was never extreme. My sister said she had nightmares about it, but she's always been the more emotional one.
It's the crazy parents who take it too far who give it a bad reputation, as I can see from the comments here. If you were one of those parents, you probably wouldn't believe you're taking it too far, and obviously that's a problem, but I don't think it should be outlawed.
