I don't think it's always evil (although sometimes it certainly is), but I think there are always better ways of dealing with a situation. I would never subject my own child to it, and I would probably look down on someone who treated their child that way.

Yes, spankings only though, not paddling or whipping. When I was a young girl, my dad would spank me when I did something seriously wrong. And it was always fair: he would spank me after repeated warnings and it was clear that I knew what I was doing wrong and kept doing it anyways. Kids need to toughen up really, it never left lasting marks or traumatized me. I was just like "Oh, that was dumb of me. I won't do it again."

I don't think you deserve to be thumbed down for this. Personally I agree with you.

I was hit as a kid but I was actually pretty well behaved. Both of my parents suffer from mental illness and tend to lose their temper over the tiniest, most insignificant things.
I believe it's child abuse and some parents tend to take advantage of their power over their children. There is no excuse for hitting somebody who can't hit back and has little understanding of the situation.

No. There are always better ways of disciplining children.
What does harming a child teach them? Especially when they're very young, they won't understand what they've done wrong and will just grow fearful of you.

As they get older, I would still disagree with it. Sure, smacking a kid tells them what they've done in is wrong but it doesn't tell them anything else except /you/ will hit them for it. When you're not there anymore, and they're in the street, will you be there to discipline them? Furthermore, will they tell you what they've done? No, for fear of a physical punishment.

I believe educating children is the way to go, tell them what they've done is wrong and /why/ it's wrong. Of course, some other form of punishment may be in order, like confiscating their phone if that's to do with what they did.

I'm conflicted on this issue. I've witnessed it being used inconsistently and sometimes the punishment does not exactly match the offense. As a result, the kid never really learns anything and retains the same undesirable behavior. But when corporal punishment was used, it was with great force, bringing about resentment towards the parent. I mean, there are kids who I think need to toughen up, though I'm unsure as to whether corporal punishment, even if applied consistently and without extreme force, would give them that thick skin we'd like to see more often in society.

  • Our two teenage daughters still get a spanking when they deserve one.

It just depends on the severity of the crime and the punishment. In most cases I would say no, so that's what I'm voting. But when all else fails and someone simply can't be taught to be better, corporal punishment may be the only option. I will say that it doesn't teach morals, only fear of consequence. So it should never be the first thing to turn to. And even then, it shouldn't be particularly brutal.

Eh...Although I have no idea what corporal means, I think I know what you mean. I grew up with spanking as a consequence, and I turned out just fine. So, obviously, if I am ever to have kids, I will spank them also (for a punishment).

Here is the deal as far as I am concerned--I was spanked as a kid--a half dozen times quite severely--and deserved every one of them! Believe me I learned right from wrong--sometimes somewhat painfully---but I learned. If kids got spanked today--we might not have the awful juvenile deliquent problems we have now. A well deserved bare ass belting would solve a lot of problems, in my opinion!

  • Yes. I was spanked and it was never extreme. My sister said she had nightmares about it, but she's always been the more emotional one.

It's the crazy parents who take it too far who give it a bad reputation, as I can see from the comments here. If you were one of those parents, you probably wouldn't believe you're taking it too far, and obviously that's a problem, but I don't think it should be outlawed.

Absolutely! I also think they should just add cameras and audio all around school from all angles. I think we should have a guard watching them. So we know exactly what kid did what and why. This also will prevent the abuse of teachers to students. So any teachers abusing children can get arrested as soon as possible or at least lose the job.

What is the difference between corporal and capital?

Corporal is physical punishment usually when dealing with misbehaved school children. Capital is the right to kill someone for a crime. So like Charlie Manson was put on death row for manipulating a bunch of teenage girls to kill people.

I believe in spanking, by the parent, open handed. Otherwise I find it unacceptable. I would refrain from spanking, unless it seemed there was no other alternative.

I was hit as a kid, although I'll acknowledge that sometimes it was necessary. I was a brat as a kid, and when I say kid I mean between the ages of 5-10. After 10 I stopped getting hit, I learned better. I think sometimes it's required, my friends would agree. Kids don't listen well; I wouldn't subject my kids to the belt, but I could see why I was. Basically, I could see the justification. Although when I saw my uncle subject my cousin to it, I'll admit that it was hard to watch, but you get use to it. You learn to live with it and you understand how being rambunctious can have consequences.
