From a scientific standpoint, I have not read nor have I seen anything supporting this claim.
From a religious standpoint, man will not know the date of the Earth's destruction. Being that the media perpetuates this, even though the Mayans themselves have said that 2012 is not the end of the world, but rather just the end of the calender cycle, technically makes this a false prophecy.
Besides, the Mayans didn't even get to finish their fucking calender. Cortez just had to come kill 'em all v.v

There's a meme about the Mayan calendar. It's a good point, but I think the hindu calendar also ends on that date. Mystery after mystery.
