I wholeheartedly agree with this.
To criticise someone on their race is ridiculous. You cannot choose which race you belong to, it's an absolute random event. To criticise someone on something which they haven't chosen and cannot change will be foolish.
But to criticise someones religion, yes. Some people here are mistaking what Rowan Atkinson is trying to say. He isn't saying it is fair to insult and intend offense and hurt against someone for following their religion. He is saying it is fair to CRITICISE. Criticism should never be offensive and intentionally hurt someones feelings and effect a persons emotions. Criticism should only induce the other person to think and maybe change the way they think about things, the way they behave or what they believe in for the better.
Personally, I do not believe in God, but I have never gone out to intentionally hurt someones feelings for doing so. During debates, I have criticised religion and the theory of God but it was strictly criticism. It did not offend or hurt the feelings of the opposition or any spectator in the room who belonged to a religion.
