I saw something about this in a Bill Bryson book. He claimed it had something to do with the cart makers in the US setting out their seating arrangements differently. This at a time when it didn't matter on which side of the road you drove on. later it became more practical to have evryone on the left because the carts were already built favoring this. No mystery or provokation involved.
Do the British STILL drive on the wrong side just to be contrary?
