I may be wrong, but I think the term "British" refers to Great Britain or the British Isles which includes Scotland and Wales and not just England. Hence English people muttering "harumph! I do bloody say, old chap!" and adjusting their angry monocles when people don't use the precise terms.

In England, we tend to be content with the idea that we're part of a whole, and tend not to care if somebody refers to us in terms of that part or that whole. British, English - it doesn't really matter (unless it's sport). Wales and Scotland are more likely to identify themselves as Welsh and Scottish respectively, but plenty of English people call themselves British or Brits, especially internationally. So I wonder why Darkoil makes the distinction?

It's not a bad word at all. Any Brit who takes offence at being called British is bizarre as far as I'm concerned.
As to why British people still drive on the opposite side of the road, whether or not your post was an attempt at trolling (which, judging by the general anti-British sentiment being flung around by you, it is), I will say that it would be very difficult, very expensive, time consuming without any great benefit to us if suddenly the government or society in general decided we should swap.
Regardless of the history, the reasons to still drive on the left are pretty obvious. 'We've come too far to turn back now'.
Do the British STILL drive on the wrong side just to be contrary?
