I'm a schizo, and my shots are to control overproduction of some chemicals my brain produces to control my hallucinations and paranoid behavior. They don't dull my brain, they actually make me sharper in a strictly quantitative sense, because without the distractions I can pay attention to detail and follow logical thought patterns.
There's a lot of hype about the 'creative' nature of the mentally ill, but the expression is really just an outlet for unimaginable amounts of emotional pain. It's not a wonderful thing.
The attitude that health professionals are trying to drug people like me into submission so we'll go away is extremely harmful, because it creates a fear that keeps people who could really use some help from seeking it. Medication definitely doesn't always work for everyone, but it makes things better for a lot of us.
