Do people think this?

I'm a server at a casual fine dining restaurant.. i find that so many guests think its okay to blame me for things that are out of my control. like the kitchen for example: "Why iS my fOod tAkiNg sO loNg?" does it LOOK like im cooking it???? like today i had a party of 6 that their food took 22 minutes. thats actually VERY fast for a 6-top. at the 20 minute mark, this father decides to yell at me in a very aggressive tone as to why their food was taking so long and claims "we have been here for an hour!" --they were actually my only table at that moment so i rung in the order right after i took it. i checked the kitchen ticket and it had only been 22 minutes when their food came out. i replied with "well i have been waiting for it, but i can check how much longer it will be." and he said "well can you go and get it already?! we're really hungry, we've been waiting for a while!" and i said "if it is in the window, i'd bring it to you." so i go over to the kitchen, and i check on the food, and it was all just about ready, just undergoing the finished plating procedures for each dish. so this made me mad because now the guests think i was literally holding their food hostage just so they couldnt eat. so i returned to the table and gave them their food. got them any salt or pepper and hot sauce they needed. i refilled their drinks, everything. and then they complain to my manager -- after they finish all their food-- that everything took an hour and they were super mad and they got $50 off of their meal and didnt tip me. like how the fuck is it MY fault that the kitchen cant cook your food fast enough? why should that reflect MY performance? the cooks dont get anything out of MY tips.. they get paid hourly and i get paid $2.17 an hour.. tipping is based off of MY performance, not the kitchen's performance. if it's based off of kitchen's performance, a manager could take off your meal because thats what you're paying for.. that shouldnt be at the expense of MY tip. Why do people think it's okay to blame their servers for the mistakes of the cooks or even bartenders? or hostesses even? i always slap a smile on my face and will get you anything you ask for with nothing but positivity, trying to make your dining experience the best that -> I <- can make it.. but i feel like people dont think we, as servers, are other people too. REAL people with feelings and we can only do as much as we have the ability to, we're not magicians.

I wouldn't even get out of bed for that pathetic excuse of a wage.

Whatever problems a guest might have are definitely going to fall back on the server, he/she is the face of the restaurant while they are dining and the only direct link to it. Don't take any of it personally if it doesn't concern your actual work. Apologize in name of the kitchen or bar, not yourself.

You can really tell a lot about people by how they treat service providers. Some people are complete asses and interactions with servers give them the perfect stage to show it. That said, part of a servers job, like it or not, is to be the first line of communication with patrons. Servers who get good at this learn a lot about dealing with people. Your tip should reflect your performance. Other people’s screw ups shouldn’t cost you money, but should be brought to the attention of management so the screw up can be dealt with (that’s what the patron wants). Patrons should tip you right and have a choice whether to return, or not.

What restaurant do you work at? Something like a fast food place or a fancy exclusive type?

    • fancy exclusive type.. not extremely fancy-- the uniforms we wear are somewhat hipster type, but the ambiance of the restaurant is very fancy and the food and bar is high quality. its right next to the biggest resort in the city and the nicest mall in the city as well.

    • i never said i dont make bank.. i make bank. its just there are certain people who i feel come in with the intent to just complain about things that are out of the server's control. its not every table, i'm just asking why people often think it's the waitstaff's fault for things they obviously have no control over.

      • There are people like that everywhere....even on this site. Their only joy comes from making others feel as miserable and worthless as they are. The best thing to do is maintain your dignity and be as kind as you can be. This too, shall pass. Best wishes and stay strong!

Unfortunately, one thing we'll never run out of are entitled dicks who believe everyone who works in a service industry is their temporary servant.

If you ever get to the point where you're ready to move on, wait until you get a customer like that again, calmly inform them how to get to the nearest McDonald's and suggest they might be happier dining there.

I wouldn't be surprised if the scene had nothing at all to do with you or the efficiency of the kitchen staff. Some people play that game to get a discount and justify not tipping. Or maybe the guy is just an inadequate dweeb who gets shat on all the time at home and at his work, so throwing around the little weight he has made him feel big and powerful.

Dealing with people like that is annoying, but lots of people are self-centred, ignorant, and impatient. Consider learning how to deal with them gracefully to be part of your education.

Then stop complaining. The man probably WAS waiting an hour. He had to be seated first genius.
