Do people naturally ween off medications?

I have been taking ADHD meds for 13 years now and every time I go in for an evaluation or talk about the continuation of my medication, they always tell me that when SOME people reach older adulthood, they naturally don't need the medication anymore. I trust that the doctor knows best and all but I freak out at the thought of every time I have forgotten to take my meds and the horrible outcome for that day was. Do you think that people naturally stop needing the medication they are taking or could it be that maybe the person never really needed the medication to begin with?

  • Most ADD and ADHD medications are narcotic stimulants....mostly amphetamine based. The effects of you not taking your med for the day is probably more of a very real drug withdrawal making you feel shitty. If you are taking something like adderall or ritalin or vyvanse, you are basically just taking stimulant based narcotics daily...FOR YEARS...when you skip a day or two..you go into mild amphetamine/stimulant withdrawal which can cause tiredneas, body aches, unable to focus etc...basically the opposite of the drugs effects. Maybe you are takibg a newer non narcotic adhd medicine..but I doubt it.

      • That is just long acting ritalin...So you have been taking a stimulant for 13 years. Once you stop or wean off You are going to feel some withdrawals for a while..but they fade and you feel normal again.

  • Assuming you're taking them for ADHD they are certainly something you don't need to begin with. Now depending on your lifestyle, (school, job, etc.) If you are expecting of yourself to complete a certain amount of tasks, then the meds could and should play a role in that. (With some people meds could be replaced with meditation/other strategies, depending on how much tasks requiring focus you are attempting to accomplish). But to lead a happy and fulfilling life these meds are totally unnecessary, if you are open to pursuits that are complementary to the way your mind naturally works

  • Definitely depends. Also sometimes the benefits of continuing to take the drug are not outweighing the downsides. Some people quit for practical reasons. And some people get results from therapy/other methods.
