Do other countries make up dumb holidays too?

I went out to check the mail cause I am expecting something I ordered off ebay.
I go out to an empty mailbox and thought, "Oh yeah, it is president's day again".
In my state though we already have one "president's day" on dec 24th.

So if my calculations are correct, there are at least 25 mondays a year where the govt doesn't work because of some dumb shit like presidents day, MLK day, christmas, St Patrick's day... Of course for the REALLY silly ones like st patricks day, they just make up something else so they bdo not have to go in the following monday.

Do other nations outside the USA do that?

    Americans don't have a lot of vacation time. So what's wrong with having a few "useless" holidays. It's a free day so take it.

      This is a good point. American's do have way more govt holidays than most other western countries, but you also have fuck all personal holiday.

      For example I'm in Australia and my husband gets 6 weeks on top of govt holidays, I think the average is 5 but he has a good employer.

      When I lived in the UK I got 4 weeks plus govt holidays. This was considered low by a lot of people's standards.

    Sure they do, and for the record US hates immigrants but it sure like to steal thier holidays. 5 de mayo= Mexico st patties= ireland and so on.

    It is just the govt who gets stupid holidays. I mean some people get christmas, thanksgiving, and July 4th but those are no guarantee.

      I think the feds make up some kind of "different" holiday to make up for it though

      They do get more holidays than the rest of us working folk.

      So on certain holidays, the govt does not work. No one is really sure how that is different than any other day.
