Nobody has the right to assault you and you are free to protect yourself and your belongings.
You could be wearing a hat with the confederate flag, or even one that says "Fuck off"... It's your hat, you're paid for with your own money and nobody has the right to take it from you, or damage it. Feel free to protect it. This is self defense.
