Even certain types of lager are supposed to affect people. Stella Artois is commonly known as "wife beater" here. Personally, I think that's just because it's a bit stronger than most people prefer.
But I do think different types of alcohol can affect you subtly. I hated being drunk on wine. It made me feel terrible. Beer was nice if you've got a full day and a group of friends to descend with. The best experience I ever had was with cocktails. A friend and I were mashed already when we started in on the cocktails. Both of us felt like we were floating when we left the cocktail bar. We were weightless and couldn't feel our feet on the pavement. We also felt perfectly sober and at one with the world. We never managed to repeat that feeling (so don't assume it's common), but it was perfect that one time.
