I own a rifle and the majority of my friends in my social circle either own a gun or shoot them recreationally. We get together, go to the desert and shoot for sport. We enjoy the sport of shooting as much as archers enjoy archery, drag racers enjoy racing and so on. All are deadly sports, but when done responsibly, carry a low risk.
We are not so much upset because we are afraid of being attacked. We are upset because there are people out there who want to restrict us, take away our rights and label us as crazy, overly patriotic assholes who crave blood because a handful of assholes do use guns (most of which are obtained illegally on their part) to fulfill their violent fantasies. Then they turn around and say losing our rights is a small price to pay to keep the community safe, and while a lot of us agree with background checks and the like, we don't agree that being marginalized and so restricted in what we can own will keep criminals from getting a hold of firearms.
My point is, many gun activists are going after the wrong people. It's not us legal handlers who you need to be worried about, it's the people who don't give a shit about the law. The fact that we are lumped in with these fuckers doesn't make us any more understanding of the cause. Ownership of firearms is a right. We shouldn't have a justify a constitutional right any more than gays should have to justify wanting equal civil rights.
Do Americans love guns too much?
