I really wonder sometimes how people were brought up. Here in the UK whilst it's not a unversal practice to remove your shoes at the door, it is good manner to always ask when you visit someone to always ask if you should. It's usually obvious here when a house is shoes off, when the householder answers barefoot or in slippers and there are shoes stored by the door. I always ask first if I am uncertain. My family know to ask. Given our somewhat wet and cold climate, the majority of people wear slippers most of the time so it's a good idea to take a pair with you. Guest slippers are not viewed favourably here. The alternative is to have cold feet. But the bottom line is to always ask first.
Disrespectful to leave your shoes on in someone's house?
