"Intelligent life could thrive in the oceans, far away from us humans."
That reminds me of the crack about dolphins: "If they're so damned intelligent and have such amazing hearing, why the hell do they let themselves get caught in fishing nets that are being dragged around by huge, noisy boats?"
I'm convinced that most most of the pseudo-scientific claims about unknown large animals are BS, but I suppose it is just possible that there might be intelligent species in the ocean that are unknown to us because they've always been very good at avoiding any contact with humans. The oceans are huge, and the search for MH370 highlighted just how much of places like the southern Indian Ocean isn't known at all to science, and rarely crossed by ships. Still, you'd think carcasses of such species would occasionally wash up on beaches, although I suppose the absence of such evidence could be explained away by the hypothetical species having death rituals that resulted in the bodies sinking into the abyss.
Did you ever see a mermaid?
