Deviantart has made me hate anime

as an artist i used to love manga etc and value it probably above all other modern dynamic graphic styles. but since i joined deviantart the endless tide of fanboys/girls imitating it, obsessing about it, giving themselves japanese names, doing cutesy 'kawaii' drawings of themselves, trying to use japanese words and leaving ass-licking comments on japanese artists pages and all the other saccharine bull has just totally put me off it all.

Same here. It gets really annoying, but there's plenty of GOOD art on DeviantART. You just need to know where to look.

Personally I think DA is full of more trashy porn than anime. But yeah, I understand. I'm an "anime artist" I guess, though I like to play in cartoon and semi realism styles too. I don't want to go to japan. And I don't want to be a manga artist lol so there are some of us sane people there.

Some anime fanart is cool, but some of it is dirty and weird. A picture of two anime characters hugging or something, it's like, "Okay, that's normal." A picture of two anime characters in bed... vomitocious. (If that's a word.)

some stuff on dev is good, but I just dont find it amazing, i stay off the site entirely, but ive posted ssome things. they arent fan things, its all my stuff. And it is stupid when ppl use kawaii. Cant they say cute in english? But just remember, manga may b desecrated by that to u, but manga is still good original stories. Its better than abstract. XD

Oh yes,I have to agree.I like anime but jeez...Deviantart has shoved it down my throat.
It's a unique and certainly popular style that has come to the west but It's getting so tedious now.
I see the same things over and over It's starting to make my eyes bleed.
I have a style somewhat simular but I try to make it as different as possible as if you chould tell it came out of my mind.I try different art sets for eyes(some inspired by bambi or timburton or jessica rabbit*)
And atleast you can tell the difference in face appearences.
I just hate it seems like that's all people draw these day, especially young adults and kids.I mean future artists.
Also,Modern art and abstract....anyone can do it...

i agree with you those guys really don't understand the art they are like really dumb making bad drawings and admiring characters instead see trough the artist they don't even understand the value of the manga

I'm with you on that one. I had to stay away from deviantart because the more I browsed, the more turned off I became with anime. I enjoy some anime, and like and respect some of the aspects of the Japanese culture, I refuse to go around trying to speak Japanese and calling things "kawaii" unless I'm IN THE COUNTRY and have to speak the language in order to communicate! And I've never ONCE been to an anime convention nor have I wanted to attend one. I guess it's not so much the art as it is the obsession I often see on deviantart.

  • Yeah they don't have their own style yet let them be they'll evolve over it
what's your Deviant Art account ?

I hear ya! I feel the same... It's ruined the value of anime and manga as a style and I get slightly repulsive feelings when watching/reading any of it, even the good stuff! And it has given so many a false/shallow perception of Japanese culture - it's not all "kawaii! desu desu desu yaoi yuri LOVEEE". Strange how other cultures haven't been as exploited and overused in some aspects that totally put up a stereotype...

  • chilledRunnings

I can understand being put off by that, but you have to take into account the fact that running away from anime isn't going to save you from obnoxious prats.

Let's see, anime has it's fanboys, but so do western cartooning styles. The debates that evolve around indie vs. mainstream can be ridiculous, and folks get their panties in a bunch about Spiderman getting divorced or whatever and "OH my god, how dare anyone prefer manga to western comic books! They hate their own country!?" etcetera. I can't count on one hand the number of realism artists I've run into that think that just because they're -trying- to draw realistically, skill or lack of it aside, that makes them better artists and people than all those aforementioned PERIOD.

Dillholes are inescapable. If you drop anime because there are assholes associated with it, I'm afraid there's going to be precious little in this world that you're going to be able to enjoy. Just do what you want to do and what you like. Don't let the actions of dilettantes dictate your own.

I don't want to categorize all anime artists as a whole (because I like a lot of anime artists, as well as other artists), but I don't like how people obsess over anime thinking it's the best art/comic/cartoon ever, never broadening their horizons to other fantastic art forms and styles (nor do they want anything that's remotely non-Japanese, at least to those who are obsessed with anything Japanese).

I have a lot of friends who are major anime fans, and although I am a bit of a fan, way more often than not, most anime turn me off due to numerous reasons. They all want to go to Japan (and I've been there as a stopover), so whenever they say they want to go to Japan, I'd say I'll prefer to go to Croatia to spite them.

  • LMAO! Sorry but I love deviantart and all the fanart they draw, and all the stupid things they say. C'mon it's not like they act like that in public, maybe it is an escape for some of them.

No. A lot of them DO act like that in public..that's the thing. I see it a LOT where I live. Drawing and creating art, that's one thing. Hell, I love drawing and I even customize My Little Ponies, that gives me a bit of an escape. However, obsessing about something, ANYTHING, really isn't normal. Like the weeaboos who think Japan is the only country to create really beautiful things. Finland is AMAZING in terms of music, Canada has such beautiful scenery and such friendly people...my point being, every country is wonderful in its own way, and thus, each country has something special about its entertainment and animations...and the people on DA don't see that. They're too busy obsessing over anime and Pocky. Geez, I went on a tangent there...sorry (remind me not to post when I'm hopped up on allergy medication) Anyway, basically..long story short, DA seems to be a cest pool of obsessive individuals who make it REALLY difficult for someone who has a grip on reality to enjoy some anime for the sake of the artform.

Awesome. Welcome to the world of grown ass adults. Ever try your hand at good ol' fashioned hand-drawn, whiskey for guts, blood sweat and ink, old iron balls, god-bless-America animation? Don't knock it till you tried it friend.

I feel the same. Try typing in "Human Sonic" on deviantart, instead of Sonic the Hedgehog as a human, you see a bunch of Anime-styled, Gay, Japanese, Men.

I say just ignore the fan girls and see it as you used to. I hate it when people pair up anime characters but when I come across it I ignore it.

If your sick of seeing it on deviantart and it's put you off it, why not just ignore that site and go to proper anime sights, or draw your own, it could get you back into it. I never used to know anime existed, but now I love it

That's pretty rude to say that he/she is being overdramatic.

I used to really love anime/manga style and drew it for 7 years before my slow transition to realism.

When I created dA, I began to hate it, because although there ARE great anime artists, even the realistic super-amazing painting-quality anime gets old and repetitive as hell. It's a huge fad and I hope it goes away...however, it's better than modern art. -gag-

humm yeah DA is flooded with them but if your art is manga related its almost unavoidable or maybe you spend too much time in there. I quit anime for a while but then it it sort of comes back.
