I'm not saying I disagree with you; I doubt I could live in the UK. The idea of big brother's intrusiveness to the extent it exists in the UK, just creeps the shit out of me. CCTV and all that; how Orwellian.
Generally, I think you'll find the south to be more friendly than the north, until you get to Texas. Texas is really a foreign country masquerading as a state for the present.
California used to be the home of the lunatic fringe in the US, but now it's just a suburb of Tijuana.
Canadians, on the other hand, are all squeezed in between the US and the tundra, so they've had to learn to be nice to one another because their country is actually only a tiny strip of habitable land.
