Because rehabilitation doesn't work for the sort of crime that is caused by the society the criminal is in. If you put them straight back into that society then yes, of course they're going to reoffend. Out of interest, exactly how many people in prison today are reoffenders?
The number one best thing about the society I live in (and that is no exaggeration) is that we don't kill people because society has let them down, and we view people as people no matter what they have done.

I just don't understand your view point, unless you are a rapist or child molester, trying to cover your own ass. Why in the world would you even want to chance these sickos harming someone you love, after release because they are "rehabilitated"? It just doesn't make sense releasing them back into society, no sense at all, to me.

Anyway, you rehabilitate them, offer them a place to live in your home, but warn them that if they come near me or mine, with or without evil intent, I WILL exterminate them, as I would any other disease ridden vermin.

Rape is NOT a crime of sex, it is a crime of power and rage. If you do not understand that, then this whole discussion is pointless. Most child molesters, by their own admission, are driven by compulsions that they cannot control. Rehabilitation cannot work for most of them, which is why there are public lists and websites of these people, which can be accessed by anyone. Forewarned is forearmed.
However admirable your views on people's ability to change are, you are seriously out of touch with reality.
What evidence? Your opinions are not evidence. Unless I am mistaken, you do not work in the criminal justice system, nor with any agency which would give you a background upon which to base your claims.
I also work for neither, but I am not making any claims, other than that I feel these people are a blight on society and would rather see them destroyed rather than returned to society. There are enough unconvicted crazies on our streets these days that we can not yet justify destroying.
So, go ahead and invite all the child molesters and rapists into your home and after a few years, please get back to me with your impressions of how they changed and became productive members of society.

This isn't the same as how society lets down people with disabilities or homosexuals, etc.
There is a big difference between being rejected for who you are and being rejected for your actions.
Child molesters have all made inappropriate actions based on their own choices and they are rightfully judged.
There is a difference between a pedophile and a child molester. Not all pedophiles hurt children and many of them never act on it. However all child molesters have made a bad choice and choices have consequences.
Pedos have an unfortunate mental illness, child molesters act on it. There is a big difference.

97.5% of rapists don't commit rape again after they've been released. Rehabilitation works.
