First of all, I feel bad for you that you got turned down. As far as it being cruel, I mean I feel bad for you and all, but at the same time, you kind of asked for it. You asked her to give you a reason, and she was honest. Lots of times, guys complain that girls aren't direct enough or honest enough with guys about whether or not they like them... that obviously isn't an issue with this girl
You seem confused about why she turned you down and maybe why she reacted the way she did. It seems like you got the idea that there was some interest from her, when it seems like there might not have been. I think you should ask yourself "Did I do anything to turn her off?" or "Were there any signals that I missed or misinterpreted?" This will help you in the future with girls to be able to tell if it is worth going for it or not.
It seems like maybe she was irritated based on what she said about the trip. If she was trying to send a message to you guys, then maybe there was something that happened that turned her off from your advances or something like that.
Most of all though, don't take it too personally. When girls say that you're "not their type", sometimes that really just means that they have a very specific preference of guy and it may not be anything against you or even how attractive you are, it may just be that she likes guys of a certain race, or maybe she likes more edgy guys, or maybe she likes nerdy guys, or maybe she likes big guys, or skinny guys... who knows? It could be a lot of things.
