  • Your sternum may be one bone, but it is connected to two clavicals (collerbones) and MANY ribs. The "crack" sound that people hear when cracking bones such as their knees, fingers, etc is perfectly normal and the result of changing pressure from one side of the joint (the space between two bones) to the other side. I have never heard of case of cracking the sternum, but in general, cracking bones is normal and does not cause harm. There are cases of ribs that are not as strongly attached to the sternum as they should be. These usually cause pain, especially when excess pressure is applied to the area. Ask someone to "hug" you tightly with their arms placed on the area where the crack occurs. If you feel a pain, then it might be a 'slipped rib' and physical therapy can help. Otherwise, cracking sounds are usually normal - It could even be the bones in the front of your shoulder making this sound.
