Cracking my sternum

I can crack my sternum. i dont know why, its solid bone, but i can push on it, and hear a cracking sound, but its like a wet crack, not just a normal finger crack, the sound is thicker. if that makes sense. and if i stretch my chest out, and squeeze my shoulders backwards towards eachother, my sternum will crack too. is this normal?

Mine cracks too! But I don't poop it on purpose. It just...pops. It's so weird! I'm glad it's not just me but I wonder about long term side effects and what causes it.

I have moments where I need to pop my sternum. What the crackig sound is, is the connective tissue from your sternum to your ribs forcing little air pocket things out of the tissue. needing your sternum popped is very common amongst people who slouch real bad or women who have large breasts ( the latter is sadly my problem) but it is completely normal, if it starts to feel odd other than the feelin of needing to be popped, you should probably go see a doctor. :-)

you shouldn't crack anything in your body!! You'll feel it when you're old I promise you!!! I'm 26 and used to crack my knuckles all the time.. Now they hurt when I'm cold.

It's been proven that cracking your bones has no effect on you in later life. I'll agree, we're all different, so it may be different in your case, but the notion "you shouldn't do it" is completely wrong.

Yes this happens to me too like when I wake up and I'm stretching or something like that. It's normal. It happens to some of my friends too. Don't worry.

You couldn't be further from the truth. When you crack a bone/joint, you're simply bursting an air bubble in the fluid from the surrounding joints. The Sternum is a bone, with joint/cartilage surrounding it. If you exert enough pressure on it, you can crack it.

Sorry the above comment was meant as a reply to another posters comment.

But in responce to your question, yes it is normal. You're not the only one who does it. I myself do it - and admittedly - I love doing it. There's a great deal of satisfaction when I pop it. So carry on! unless you start to feel pain.

Your sternum may be one bone, but it is connected to two clavicals (collerbones) and MANY ribs. The "crack" sound that people hear when cracking bones such as their knees, fingers, etc is perfectly normal and the result of changing pressure from one side of the joint (the space between two bones) to the other side. I have never heard of case of cracking the sternum, but in general, cracking bones is normal and does not cause harm. There are cases of ribs that are not as strongly attached to the sternum as they should be. These usually cause pain, especially when excess pressure is applied to the area. Ask someone to "hug" you tightly with their arms placed on the area where the crack occurs. If you feel a pain, then it might be a 'slipped rib' and physical therapy can help. Otherwise, cracking sounds are usually normal - It could even be the bones in the front of your shoulder making this sound.

I can do it too, for about a year I worried about it, but I didn't experience pain. But it's cool to show to friends, because they look like I am crazy LOL. :D

That makes my chest hurt. There's probably nothing wrong with you unless you have pain, but you definitely shouldn't be able to crack your sternum. Not normal!
