Counting the words that people say

i count the words that people say, for example words in a song. I will imagine in my head 3 circles and when words are spoken I count along the circles back and forth to each word like 123 and then back 321. I've looked online and it says counting the amount of words people say is a sign of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) but I'm not too confident in online diagnostics! so I'm just trying to get a second opinion on this, is this normal? and does anybody else do similar things to this?

Is It Normal?
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • Dude, I think you need to find out what OCD is. YOU are ocd. get used to it. Every intelligent person has it. Its been proven that VERY smart people are VERY ocd. Its a good thing. I have really bad ocd too. I used to count people words without even realizing it, but that was a wee bit back.

  • You can break that habit. I used to count the squares i walked on in the sidewalk. I had to make it an even number. Then i just stopped. I feel for you though. I mean...wow. you probably dont know what the hell people say to you.

it probably goes like " so we just wanted to let you know that the tests came back.everything seems normal. You are free to leave the hospital. Do you have any more questions?" The OP answers "huh? wait...what happened? oh...no i dont have any questions but can you please say 1,3,5, or 7 more words?you said an odd number and it really bothers me." lolololol

  • What the hell. Do you know how many OCD stories I've seen since I've been on this site? It's astounding. I mean, it's so common that sadly, this is normal. If it really affects your daily activities, my suggestion is to go see a doctor.

  • OCD proof positive! I count the letters in words and sentences until I get an even number. You are in denial if you think you need a second opinion... It is definitely an OCC behavior. If it is severely bothersome ask your doctor about medication, otherwise just learn to live with it; like the millions of other people that suffer from OCD.

  • I do the same thing but for me everything has to be even on each hand either 5 fingers on each hand or four. And everything has to add up to four and when it doesn't I take the last number and re-do it four more times to make one that's perfect... Just my little idiosyncracy... It might be OCD but my parents don't believe me
