I can imagine some people 'doing such a thing'. People have already done such a thing. People have even rounded up mobs and assaulted others on the basis of rumours that they're pedophiles.

Yep. And such people are scum who should be brutally punished. "But... but... but we must protect the CHILDREN!!!" is NOT a valid argument.
I've seen firsthand the lynch-mob effect amongst humans; not a pretty sight, let me tell you. Really, I think it just illustrates my belief that many people are more beast than man.
To anyone considering taking action against someone based on rumors, remember this: IT COULD JUST AS EASILY BE *YOU* AT THE CENTER OF SUCH ALLEGATIONS. Stop and think.
