LSD or other mind altering drugs could possibly open their minds to new and creative ideas. they would be un-encumbered by mainstream ideas. i think it's entirely possible that if done in a controlled manner someone could think of something in a whole different way and have a breakthrough

Maybe, but it's quite unlikely and there is a possibility more harm than good could come of the experiments.
