Contemplating getting off of social media

I've been feeling lately that the negativity I've been seeing on social media is bringing me down and that I'm just tired of reading craziness and hateful judgment and complaining towards every single thing that exists. I want to go out and actually live my life rather than wasting time staring at a screen, too.

I know technically this is a form of social media, but I'm talking more specifically about Facebook and the like. Has anyone gotten off of social media or taken a break from it and noticed a positive difference?

People thought there was something seriously wrong with me for not having a Facebook account in ‘08. They were treating me like I was dying of cancer.

I just disabled my facebook account couple weeks ago. I haven't really been using it for years though, checking in like twice a year to respond to messages from relatives which have been sent months before.

Taking an actual break from social media can be extremely beneficial, I've never been that addicted but I see many people around building their entire empire of self esteem on the foundation of their online reputation. I'm not a boomer, also I recognize how quickly the attachment grows to the attention it grants, but it's a very unhealthy sort of reward as you'll always be caught in the loop of dependency.

I'd recommend to take a break and see how it goes, there are better ways to feel like a healthy individual, good luck fellow.

Do it. I left Facebook in May and have no regrets. I don’t miss the constant political fights, everyone (on both sides) getting offended over increasingly frivolous things and exaggerated life updates from people I don’t care about.

It will feel weird at first not having an instant time filler and being a little slow on the meme uptake but I didn’t realise social media was a chore until I stopped doing it.

Facebook literally runs social tests. One example is providing you with “sad” advertising or making anything negative come up in the algorithm more often to then examine whether it’s effected you based on your activity.

Shits fucked up. If people want to get in contact with you, they’ll find a way. Fuck that “keeping in touch” shit.

I don’t even know what you’re talking about. I have had FB since my eldest was born. 8 years, my dude.

I totally remember that. It said that the dress was in fact black and blue. I see white and gold. My son said he sees black and blue. Very silly.

Those tests, I have always assumed even the silly ones are part of that, like "Type in your initials and we will tell you which disney character you are".

I deleted all my social media accounts 4 years ago because I don’t see the point in them. Believe me, you’ll live without it. But you can just take a temporary break from it then you can just go back whenever you feel like it.

Word to everything that’s already been said. To Me it just seems like a vacuum of boring and needy people. But it’s useful for them because it gives them that (false) sense of self importance that they crave... I’ve never been big on false bravado or had a desire to know exactly what everybody in the world is eating for lunch. Self consumption

Do it. I got off facebook probs about a year ago. One of the best decisions I've ever made. I'm 23 btw, so I do understand how important social media is to young people.

I almost never use social media. I am on Facebook and Linkedin; and only check in occasionally to see messages.

Facebook is over rated. Just use it for the animal groups tbh. Lots of cute photos and ugly ones you can learn from. Suvh as ear infections strange bowel movements etc. Gross but educational and one can never be to educated when it comes to taking care of the furballs

Social media is like meth. It only affects you if you let it affect you.

I was never a big Facebook user, but it's now been years since I posted or commented.

And, yeah, this is a weird, sorta-social media site, but as daft as some of the questions and responses can be, it doesn't have the self-reinforcing toxic negativity that's seen in real social media.

I want to do this also sometimes. I've deactivated Facebook before and only used Messenger and it was really nice but a reason to use Facebook always shows up and then you're back at it again. It's hard to break loose entirely when the world is so social media based but not impossible.

Typically when I take a break from social media I feel a bit better.

Facebook and social media are just boring. How do people get hooked?
