One thing you have to remember is cultural context. Back in biblical times a man who divorced his wife wasn't just splitting up, he was basically casting her out with no means of survival and no protection. Its not like she would just get alimony and go hang out at the singles bar. Divorce was equivalent to social exile and leaving the woman with nothing.
SO, its not exactly the same these days.
As for gay marriage, my personal thought is hey at least they want to be monogamous. Live and let live, its not up to me to judge.
