  • May I ask why you don't believe in God and reject Jesus?

    • Sure. I don't believe in the Christian God (or any God) for the same reason that you (presumably) don't believe in Zeus, Odin, etc.

The reason I reject Jesus is because he, according to the Bible, not only said good, loving things, but quite some objectionable things as well. One example of this is Matthew 10:37.

Above all things, I believe in being a good person.

Do you really think I will go to Hell forever?

      • "I don't believe in the Christian God (or any God) for the same reason that you (presumably) don't believe in Zeus, Odin, etc." What reason might that be?

"Above all things, I believe in being a good person." And how do you define being a good person?

        • "What reason might that be?"

Ask yourself why you don't believe in Zeus, Odin, etc. and you've got the answer. For me perrsonally, its the total lack of evidence.

"how do you define being a good person?"

I try to be a good person by treating others the way I'd like to be treated. Are you saying that you can't be a good person if you're not a Christian?

          • "Ask yourself why you don't believe in Zeus, Odin, etc. and you've got the answer." Well, the reason I don't believe in Zeus and Odin and the like is that I believe in the Christian God and He proclaims Himself to be the only true God, and I'm inclined to believe Him. I'm assuming you have different reasons for not believing in them. "For me personally, its the total lack of evidence." What sort of evidence would you like to see? What would convince you?

"I try to be a good person by treating others the way I'd like to be treated." That's admirable. And do you always live up to your own standards? "Are you saying that you can't be a good person if you're not a Christian?" Not at all, I'm just asking some questions.

I could easily turn that around and say that I don't believe in the Christian God, because I believe in Zeus, Odin, etc. and that I'm inclined to believe them. It doesn't mean anything. The evidence for Zeus, Odin, etc. and the Christian God is equally poor.

"What sort of evidence would you like to see? What would convince you?"

Irrefutable evidence, like God himself telling me to my face he exists.

"And do you always live up to your own standards?"

No, as I'm a mere human, I don't always live up to my own standards. I try pretty hard, though.

"Not at all, I'm just asking some questions."

Good to hear that you don't think you can't be a good person as a non-Christian.

              • "I could easily turn that around and say that I don't believe in the Christian God, because I believe in Zeus, Odin, etc. and that I'm inclined to believe them. It doesn't mean anything." Not really. Most pantheistic religions didn't really claim that their pantheon was real while others weren't. It was more of an "ours are better and stronger than yours" kind of thing. There are even cases of adopting gods from other pantheons or merging them, the most well known example being Hermes Anubis.

"The evidence for Zeus, Odin, etc. and the Christian God is equally poor." I know of some theologians who would disagree with you on that point.

"...God himself telling me to my face he exists." I've heard many atheists claim that they'd believe only if God revealed Himself to them, but I suspect most would pass it off as a hallucination.

"No, as I'm a mere human, I don't always live up to my own standards." Interesting.
