China sucks at sports

China has 1.4 billion people, America has 330 million. Yet, China isn't beating America at the olympics medal table. USA has 79 medals right now, and China has 70 medals. You'd think with a MASSIVE population like they have, they'd win more medals, right?

Americans get paid to fart in their sleep, they have all the time in the world to practice whatever silly hobby they want
    Use your critical thinking skills

Also, if you look at medals by population, the United States ranks in like 49th place. You know who kicks ass though ? New Zealand, they’re crazy good

    • The USSR was really great at sports back in the days, especially ice-hockey.

The USSR had a highly competitive core, with an emphasis on non-monetary achievements. Even today a common thing Russians ask of our establishment for is the return of citizen and employee recognition awards, they were very common back in the day, older generations talk about the practice very very fondly.

The Chinese are just not as flashy, even with how much of a “threat” they are they aren’t ones to do big power moves or flaunt their strength. They move in silence.

I think another big factor was the birth policies of China, you aren’t as likely to support the ‘outlandish’ dreams of your one and only child if situations are already tight as is. A lot of the raising of your kid feel like a “one shot” or a “last chance” when such a serious limit is in place

You need to factor in the athletes competing for all the other countries that are in school or trained in the USA.

A lot of them are recruited and trained in the US because big money in team sports in the universities in the US. They also go out of their way to recruit the best coaches from around the world.

Some of the younger kids have been separated from their families at least for sometime periods and in training since they were 6 or 7 years old.

They are really professional athletes and never knew a normal child's life. Most have been tutored an never attended a real class room at least starting at a point where they started to show promise in a particular area.

Few exceptions but again it all comes back to money.

    • Having a bigger population means you have an advantage. More people to choose from.

It's not from more people to choose from. It's individuals choice to do or don't.

Does china have a Harlem? That's why. America is super diverse, being super diverse also means that we get the best and worst from the gene pool and since the Olympics takes the best the american best is better than chinas best.

They got some decent MMA fighters and one good heavyweight boxer. The boxer won silver in the olympics and beat the current heavyweighy champ Anthony Joshua in another amateur tournament. He doesnt have much heart tho so he didnt do as well in the prod as was expected. Idk about any other sports.
